Step inside a living Japanese temple and experience two traditional ways—Sa-Dō (the Way of Tea) and Sho-Dō (the Way of Calligraphy)—as they are practiced by the local community.
At Joshoji Temple in Toyota City, you are welcomed not as a visitor, but as a guest invited into a calm and meaningful cultural exchange.
Dressed in a traditional monk’s work robe, you begin with a gentle introduction to temple life through a guided tour of the sacred grounds.
You will learn the foundations of Buddhism and explore spaces normally closed to the public, setting the tone for a day of reflection and presence.
The experience continues with a tea ceremony, where you discover the philosophy, etiquette, and regional tea culture of Aichi.
Sharing tea becomes a moment of connection, calm, and mindful hospitality.
After a memorial-style temple meal, you are guided into Sho-Dō, the Way of Calligraphy, where breath, posture, and brush unite in harmony.
From grinding ink to writing meaningful kanji, each step becomes a meditation in motion.
You will create your own piece on a Kyoto fan and colored paper to take home as a personal expression of the moment.
More than a cultural activity, this is a shared day of stillness, creativity, and living tradition—
an invitation to experience the Japanese way through the hands and hearts of those who keep it alive.
