Waseda University was founded on October 21, 1882, by Shigenobu Okuma, a Japanese statesman who served as the prime minister. At that time, it was called Tokyo Senmon Gakko. Intially, 80 students enrolled in the fields of Political Science, Law, English, and Physical Science. Okuma's vision for the students was to inspire altruism and help others in need under the idea “Be ambitious to contribute to the world without regard to the benefits yourself, family, or your country.”

Located in Shinjuku, one of the downtown districts of Tokyo, Waseda is now one of the biggest universities in Japan with more than 50,000 students and 5,000 faculty members.
